“If a ministry for the Lord is worthy of our service, it is also worthy of our best effort and effective use of our God-given talent. To that end may our lives be dedicated and ministries blessed, that He alone might receive the honor and glory.”
DeHaan Thornton, Minister of Music, has been a part of the FLBC family since January, 1986. In 1987, he married Mindy Harper of Sheridan, and they were blessed in 2001 with a son, Harper.
Mr. Thornton attended Henderson State University at Arkadelphia on a full music scholarship. As a music major, he was involved in instrumental and choral music, studying music theory, orchestration, acoustics, conducting, western music history, and many other arts. While at Henderson, Mr. Thornton also performed with the award-winning “Show Band of Arkansas” and the Henderson Concert Choir. He toured Europe with the Choir as a baritone and performed in some of the oldest and most musically enriched cathedrals in the world.
Having over 30 years of experience in leading worship, conducting choir, and working with an orchestra, Mr. Thornton has a love for teaching children and adults music so that they may be able to use those skills some day for God. He comments, “I noticed early in my music career that many people who participated in church music programs had no, or limited, skills in the musical arts. I think that we should strive to be our best and learn as much as we can so that we can give our best for God’s Honor and Glory.”
The music ministry at FLBC consists of five performing groups as well as soloists and instrumentalists who regularly sing and play in the church services. The groups include the Sanctuary Choir, Wind Ensemble, Handbells for the adults, and two Children’s Choirs for kindergarten through sixth grade. The Children Choir is an after-school graded music program. Thornton teaches the children some actual music theory and singing principles as well as working with them on two musicals a year, which they present in December and May. There is also a pre-k choir which meets on Sunday morning and is led by one of the church members.
You are invited to participate in any part of the music ministry at First Landmark Baptist Church.
One of DeHaan’s favorite composers and musical geniuses, Johann Sebastian Bach, said, “The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.”
